The Writing Road to Reading and Spelling: Riggs
Riggs can seem very confusing compared to traditional Spelling/Phonics programs. Please be patient with this program because it really does have amazing results for many children. I have used a handful of other programs, and they do not hold a candle to the strength of the Riggs program. To make it a little less confusing, I am posting the homework and test words each week on this site. Each night students are to write each word or phonogram 5 times each. There may be times when students finish their homework at school. Studying the "test" words is optional or as needed, since we study in class every day.

The Riggs Institute
Phonograms-Letters and Sounds
Students who write the phonograms while hearing the phonograms usually learn them more quickly.
(Optional) Phonogram Cards
1. Buy a boxed set of 71 phonograms directly from the Riggs Institute for $22.50 and the audio CD for $12.50 plus shipping.
2. Download and print this handwritten set. There are four phonograms on each page. The back of the cards match the phonograms on the front. (A few cards were missing from this set - please contact me and I will copy them for you free of charge.)
3. If you would rather have a tutorial, please send me a flash drive (thumb drive) with plenty of available space. I will download several homemade videos. If you would like to keep track of your student's progress, please feel free to use the "Parent and Student Weekly Phonogram Report" below:

Trouble with Reversals? (backward letters)
If your child is still reversing a few letters you might want to consider the following helpful tools. Make sure they are saying the sounds as they write the phonograms.
1. Have your student "write" the phonograms with their finger while saying the sound on a piece of fine grit sandpaper.
2. Put any inexpensive blue, hot pink or other brightly colored hair gel in a lunch size zip top baggie. Fill it full enough that you can't see through the baggie when it lays flat on the counter. Remove all the air and seal it tight. Have your child gently "write" the phonograms on top of the baggie while repeating the sounds. The gel should move just long enough to make a clear path before it fills the space again.
3. Make the phonograms out of playdoh one at a time. Have your child trace the letters while repeating the sound several times.
