Learning at Home
Homework is Monday through Thursday, and will usually consist of the following:
Note: If your child is exceeding 30 minutes of homework a night, please let me know.
- 15-20 minutes of reading a book that is at a student's appropriate reading level. This means a student should not get more than five words on a page incorrect for a chapter book, or more than two words on a page for a picture book. If the book is too difficult, a student will actually backtrack in reading fluency. On the other hand, if a student is speeding through the book with no errors, it is too easy and will not strengthen their reading skills.
- One side of a math page and one side of timed fact practice.
- Possibly Riggs Spelling Words beginning in September. This would be writing each word 5 times each.
Note: If your child is exceeding 30 minutes of homework a night, please let me know.
Helpful information at your fingertips - check the planners!
Planners and homework folders need to be returned to school daily. Please take a minute to read through the planners with your student. Planners should be signed each evening. Initial the boxes that are provided and feel free to write me a note, if necessary. Sufficient time is given EACH DAY for students to write down assignments. If there are no assignments, look for the following note: NO HOMEWORK |

Riggs Spelling Words
A new lesson will be introduced almost every day. Each lesson includes several new words. Most of the time, students have adequate time during class to work on their spelling homework. After students practice their new words a few times, I will grade the words from that lesson.
Students are responsible for copying their spelling words with the markings correctly in 2nd grade! How to help at home - Students have plenty of time in the classroom to write their spelling homework three times with the markings and a sentence for each new word. (Practice writing sentences significantly increases dictation scores and vocabulary development.) Please check for both of these important components of Riggs homework daily. Parents can help students practice by dictating the words at home. During practice, students should be able to write the words with the markings correctly. (Parents are not expected to understand the marking system.) Compare the words they write for you to their homework for accuracy. We practice several words on a daily basis but grades are taken only after students have plenty of time to prepare. If you would like to learn more about Riggs, please attend Mrs. Leone's instructional workshop this year. Grades: 5 pts. possible per word +3 pts. for correct spelling +1 pt. for penmanship (no reversals or misused capital letters) +1 pt. for correct markings +0 pts. for incorrectly spelled words |
